Rowan’s Law - Concussion Awareness

A concussion is caused by a trauma to the head or neck. It can result from a blow to the face or neck, or a blow to the body that causes the brain to move around. The effects of a concussion can be long lasting and life altering. The healing process (recuperation) from a concussion is unique to each person and the type of injury. Treatment may be required. Returning to play too soon can prolong the period of recuperation and has been shown to increase the risk of a second concussion.

In accordance with Rowan’s Law (Concussion Awareness) Baysville Curling and Bocce Club (the “Club”) is obligated to comply with the following:

  • Ensure that athletes under 26 years of age, parents of athletes under 18, coaches, team trainers and officials confirm every year that they have reviewed Ontario’s Concussion Awareness Resources.

  • Establish a Concussion Code of Conduct that sets out rules of behaviour to support concussion prevention; and

  • Establish a Removal-from-Sport and Return-to-Sport protocol

1. Ontario's Concussion Awareness Resources

The Concussion Awareness Resources linked below contain information about concussions designed to keep athletes active and safe.

In accordance with Rowan’s Law, in order for any athletes under 26 years of age to register with the Club they must provide confirmation that they have reviewed one of the Concussion Awareness Resources within the previous twelve months. Parents must provide such confirmation for athletes under 18. Sport organizations must also not allow coaches, team trainers and officials to serve as a coach, team trainer or official for or in respect of the sport organization unless they provide confirmation that they have reviewed one of the Concussion Awareness Resources, every year.
